A Take FLIGHT Program

Girls continue to make up a growing population for the juvenile justice system. According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), major concerns for girls involved with the juvenile justice system exists surrounding such issues as gender gaps, trauma, sexual exploitation, school failure, and family violence. As a result, girls’ risk of involvement with the system is heightened. OJJDP recommends gender-specific programs and services be put in place, especially for girls who experience certain traumatic stress or crisis to include those with an incarcerated parent.
Pen Pal programs have proved to be successful for youth. Some of the benefits that have been noted include:

In partnership with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, the L.E.A.P program aims to provide strong connections and improve the participants’ confidence and outcomes. Through its L.E.A.P. program, 4 the Healing in You, Inc. hopes to be an invaluable resource and effective community resource to girls involved with the juvenile justice system who otherwise lack life supports.
